Coach students to masteryIn this section, authors Brian Goodwin and Elizabeth Hubbell liken students to master performers in areas of gymnastics, figure skating, and violin performance, hence, likening teachers to coaches of these performers. The authors say that coaches of elite performers must have a "straightforward process of observing students, identifying opportunities for improvement, focusing students on improving their skills in targeted areas, and reteaching as needed to ensure mastery of new abilities" (2013, p. 154).
