Interact Meaningfully with every studentThis section of The 12 Touchstones of Good Teaching about teacher-student interaction connects to the last section which involved engaging students. Goodwin and Hubbell cite two studies which help to show the importance of interacting with students. In one study, students list little interaction with teachers as one of the reasons they get bored with school; a second study shows that "less than half of the students believe they are 'valued members of the school community' or that their 'teachers care about their problems and feelings'" (2013, p. 79). Teachers must realize the importance of interacting with students in an effort to encourage participation and effort in the classroom.
