Safety and Respect in the ClassroomBrian Goodwin and Elizabeth Hubbell discuss the importance of students feeling safe and welcome in their schools in this last section of Being Supportive (2013). They believe "that teachers play a key role in creating safe, positive learning environments and school climates for students" (2013, p. 107). Even though teachers may not have any control over happenings outside of their classrooms, Goodwin and Hubbell suggest that in their own classrooms teachers can create "an oasis of safety-a positive environment where students can feel cared for, respected, and encouraged" (2013, p. 107).
